I can't believe I'm about to do this...
Kayla stared incredulously at what was the end of her reins. Perry was feeling real good about himself today and man, he was wanting to show it. I couldn't help but smile to myself as I patted my mount. I had already gotten up on Gerson and the gigantic baby was just sleepily flicking his tail as he walked along beside hyped up Perry. I smiled apologetically at Kayla and glanced over at my sister who jogged over to help her mount. She grinned back up at me and I shook my head, knowing exactly what she was thinking. We had acquired Perry from SOPS and quickly came to find out why they were so eager to get rid of him. His record wasn't anything to scoff at and his lines were impeccable but did he have a temper!
Let's get this show on the road!
Lily chirped and Kayla raised an eyebrow back at her. Lily steadied the stallion as best as her 5'1 frame would allow and Kayla quickly swung up. The stallion screamed but stopped, flicking his ears wildly, his eyes showing white. Lily shook her head and backed away. I looked up at Kayla who looked surprisingly confident. Well, it wasn't that surprising! Kayla had been working for us since she was 15 and was one smart, brave cookie. Now she was 21 and raring to get back on the track after her projects had fallen by the wayside. She smiled at me, careful not to shift her weight or do anything else to upset the stallion.
So a nice easy breeze then?
No sooner had the words come out of her mouth had Perry taken the bit and gone. He must have heard breeze and thought she meant gallop at the speed of sound. I had to spur Gerson forward and the maiden colt sprung forward, launching his 17.3 hand frame into the most ground-covering gallop I had ever ridden. I smiled in spite of myself as we moved up to just behind Perry. The stallion's ears were pinned to his skull as he galloped. Kayla had gained some control of Perry and had slowed him to be even with us until Perry realized that he didn't want to be even. The stallion shot ahead again but not before throwing a bite in Gerson's direction. My grey colt squealed and pressed on.
I leaned deep into Gerson's mane, letting the colt take up some of my rein. He had such a long neck, he took up a lot of the rein on his own but he knew it was go time when I let him have some more. He lept into a higher gear, coming up quickly on the grumpy stud. Kayla bit down on her lower lip as she crouched on Perry's neck. The stallion didn't seem to mind Kayla, which was good because he hated the rest of us, especially Reed and I. We were the tallest of the bunch so I guess he felt threatened by our presence.
The two colts, one older, one younger, ran as a pair now, which was the intended purpose of this workout. The pace was way faster than expected but Perry finally seemed to be settling. He was fine as long as his nose was just in front of Gerson's. Gerson seemed alright with this arrangement for now, although his auds kept flicking back and forth and I silently wondered if he had a master plan. As we rounded the homestretch, both seemed to know to kick it up yet another notch. Perry shot forward first, showing his love of running but I was surprised to feel Gerson move up without my urging.
The grey colt was gaining slowly on the bay, his already gigantic stride seeming to grow with every push. Perry pinned his ears flat again and pressed on. The final pole came quickly and Gerson had inched dangerously close to the stallion. Having officially won the race, Perry seemed pleased with himself and threw a kick in my mount's direction. He missed but it made quite the sound flying through the air. I grinned at Kayla and the blonde brought her ornery stallion back to a walk as I did the same with my colt.
Well, that was...interesting...
